It should not be extraordinary for our country to elect a mixed-race man with a non-Anglo or Aryan name to our highest office in the 21st century, and in our third century of existence as a nation, but it is. We are still a profoundly racist and xenophobic country, but we have taken a step into the future and out of the muck with yesterday’s election.

National pride is hard for me, as it is so often tied to nationalism and belligerence, and hard to separate from the “my country, right or wrong” that has gotten us into the mess we find ourselves in today. It also usually means that the speaker believes his country is better than all others – a sentiment I abhor as much as “God bless America.”

But I am proud today for the baby step we have taken toward mature adulthood.

My country ’tis of thee
Sweet Land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims pride,
From every mountainside –
Let freedom ring.

Good luck, President-elect Obama.

Now, can I have my privacy and civil rights back, please?
